The formula for remembering something you have forgotten:
HOW REMEMBER SOMETHING YOU THOUGHT YOU'VE FORGOTTEN
(from Kevin Trudeau's "Mega Memory Book")
Lie down on a flat surface.
Close your eyes.
With eyes closed, look straight up, moving your eyes as far back as they can go toward your forehead.
Picture yourself going down an escalator.
Count out loud backward 50-1.
Picture yourself stepping off the escalator into the most beautiful perfect place you can.
By speaking out loud, command your mind to remember whatever info you are trying to recall.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Valentine¹s Day; only Intermedia
Arts could bring you a night like this‹silent auction, graffiti valentines,
kissing photo booths, grab bags, massage, hair styling, live music, DJs, a 30¹
hanging food table (what?!)Š you¹ll seriously have to see it to believe it.
Whether you¹re aching to be a part of our Guinness Record Longest Twister
Marathon, or bidding on that one-of-a-kind arts experience your sweetheart will
be talking about for years to come, Love Rox is going to be the best Valentine¹s
date of your life. Bring your lover, bring your friends, bring your lover¹s
friend Š single or stag, you can¹t miss this night.

Warm Beer Cold Women
Every week Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday from Thu., January 31 until
Sun., February 17, 7:30pm Every week Sunday from Sun., February 3 until Sun.,
February 17, 1:00pm
Price: $18-$34
Theater
Guthrie Theater
818 2nd Street South
Mpls, MN
I had my definitive Tom Waits moment one night in the early 1990s, broken down
and busted-hearted in Berkeley, lying alone in the dark and unable to sleep. As
the hours went on I found myself listening to a crackly radio blues show, the
sound down and every long-forgotten tune reminding me of the post-modern growl
of Old Drano Throat. Warm Beer Cold Women will take you back, if Tom Waits ever
provided you with your own flat-tire epiphany (and I'm willing to bet he did).
This former Fringe hit features actor/singers Katy Hays, Dennis Curley, and
Robert O. Berdahl presenting stories and music from the Waits canon, backed by
an appropriately crackling junkyard ensemble. $18-$34. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
through Saturday; 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
818 S. Second St., Minneapolis; 612.377.2224. Through February 17 ‹Quinton
Skinner
3. Buffalo Tom
Fri., February 1, 8:00pm
Price: $15
First Avenue
701 1st Ave. N
Minneapolis, MN
I can understand Robert Johnson or Led Zeppelin making a deal with the devil,
but...Buffalo Tom? Still, how else to explain the reappearance of the trio, who
emerge after a nine-year absence sounding not a day older? (Those in doubt of
the Faustian bargain are directed to last summer's "September Shirt" performance
on Letterman.) After a strong run in the '90s with hits like "Birdbrain,"
"Sodajerk," and "Taillights Fade" splashed all over MTV and alt-rock radio
stations, the band went on hiatus, weary of label pressure to sound like the
Next Big Thing. They reconvened last year to record the stellar Three Easy
Pieces. Many tunes on the disc pack the punch of flannel-era BT, but others,
like "You'll Never Catch Him," showcase the band's maturity and are tinged more
with wise melancholy than with rage. The disc is as strong as anything from
their earlier canon, and the band is even better live‹so don't wait another
decade to see them. With Western Fifth and Ada Jane. 18+. ‹ Catherine Clements
4. Out There 20
Daily from Thu., January 31 until Sat., February 2, 8:00pm
Price: $14-$20
Dance & Performance
Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Ave.
Minneapolis, MN
The Super Bowl, that annual commercial fest with a few football plays thrown in
for tradition's sake, will kick off on February 3. So perhaps it's only fitting
that the Walker Art Center invited New York choreographer David Neumann to close
out the Out There series. "Feed Forward," performed by his advanced beginner
group, translates elements of athleticism to the stage, referencing the
physicality of aggression and the mind's relationship to time. Sounds like heady
stuff‹and sometimes it is‹but more often than not Neumann, who has a sharp wit
honed by his work with, among others, Doug Elkins, Laurie Anderson, Anne Bogart,
and club legend Willi Ninja, successfully uncovers the absurdity in sports drama
while also offering up meditations on its beauty. Football, baseball, tennis,
track, and ice skating are all referenced, as are the fights and psychological
meltdowns, but since Neumann's making the (metaphorical) leap from playing field
to theater, the sports allusions tend to surrender quickly to flights of the
imagination, oversized mascots, and world-class non-sequiturs. ‹ Caroline Palmer
5. Gregory Maguire
Sun., February 3, 2:00pm
Price: $7.50-$15
Readings & Lectures
Most famous for penning Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the
West, which re-imagined The Wizard of Oz and was transformed into a hit Broadway
musical, Gregory Maguire has carved himself a literary niche by looking at fairy
tales and children's stories from new angles. He's reworked Snow White and
Cinderella, and in his latest novel, What-the-Dickens, he explores the idea of
the Tooth Fairy and its relationship to youth.

Jeff Shaw, our on-air boyfrien who is the Web Editor of City Pages give us THE BEST relationship tips for our men. Here is the intimacy list Jeff came up with for our listeners:
Every relationship is different, just like every person is different. Adjust
these as needed for your particular paramour, depending on their tolerance for
romantic gestures, your ability to pull this off and how long you've known them.
Communication is the key: you don't want what you think is a lovely gesture to
creep someone out or disgust then. So talk about stuff. It's no coincidence that
several of these suggestion involving talking. Take No. 1 for example:
1. Ask each other questions.
Making questions and lists together can help you get to know that new person
better or help you see your mate in a new way. Obviously adjust them for how
long you've known a person and the type of relationship you've had, but here are
some ideas: ³Tell me three places that are special to you.² ³Tell me your three
favorite books.² ³What are the three happiest moments in your life?² This can
stimulate great conversations about why some things make the list but others
don't, and good conversations are the key to intimacy.
2. Make a mixtape.
The modern world has made music mixes all the easier, via CD or via an iTunes
playlist, but they'll always be mixtapes to me. A good one is an art.
There should be music on there that you share in common (doesn't have to include
³your song,² if you have one), new music that your intended hasn't heard before,
and it should have a sense of humor.
3. Celestial phenomena are the goods.
Meteor showers happen regularly, and clear nights are great for long walks.
Even when it's cold, you can get out and look at the lunar eclipse that's coming
next month. Walking leads to talking, and beautiful surroundings only help.
4. Tell your partner one thing you like about them that they don't always hear.
One person I knew hated being told she had a great smile because she always
heard that (even though it was true). Think of the things you most appreciate
about someone, and let them hear it every once in a while.
Everybody likes to be appreciated.
5. Plan holidays in advance.
Birthdays and anniversaries are excellent occasions to celebrate, and a little
extra thought goes a long way. Flowers are popular for a reason everyone likes
'em but you can change it up by sending a living plant that will be around a
while, delicious edibles, a beer of the month club subscription or even a
singing telegram from a barbershop quarter.
6. Cards and notes are great. Spice 'em up with poems.
I think it's great when people write love notes and leave them around the home,
or in a lunch box, or wherever they can be found. But this is why poetry was
invented, yo. Everyone has a different level of comfort with the stuff, but
trust me, not all of the most emotional stuff is super-flowery either. The best
love poem of all time (³For Tess² by Raymond Carver) uses simple language to
make its supreme oint.
7. Find activities you enjoy together.
It can be tennis or poker, art events or karaoke. I know one couple that plays
World of Warcraft together. The key element is this: you're both enjoying
yourselves, and you're spending time with each other.
8. Dates are great.
Devoting a special night just to being together no kids, no cell phones, no
basset hounds, even is great. Pick a day, and do something special (dinner, a
show, whatever) once a week or once every two weeks, as often as you can manage.
9. Visual art isn't just for painters.
Got a garden? Plant her some flowers. Want to take it up a notch? Plant the
flowers in the shape of your initials. It's winter, you say? That just means
there are opportunities for snow sculptures (or, to be simple, smiley faces) in
your yard or driveway.
10. The weekend getaway.
A change of scenery is always nice. You don't have to spend tons of money,
either find a bed and breakfast outstate, or just go on a day trip to
waterfalls, or wineries, or both. Wineries are terrific natural beauty, the
act of consuming something delicious together, and booze. How can you go wrong? |
