A new report says installing a suicide barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge would alter the view and cost as much as $50 million.
The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District commissioned the environmental report published Tuesday after mental health advocates said more needs to be done to prevent people from jumping.
Two dozen people commit suicide on the famous span each year on average. Currently the only safety barrier is a 4-foot-high handrail.
The report presents five design options for a barrier costing $25 million to $50 million.
Two options would extend the existing rail. Two would replace the railing. One would install hanging nets to catch jumpers.
The bridge district’s board plans to vote on the proposals later this year.
