Name: Marti Erickson
Hometown: Originally a tiny town called Chariton, Iowa, but I've been in Minneapolis since coming here for graduate school in 1968, so Minneapolis definitely is my home town.
Been with FM107 since: May 6, 2006 (the day when my daughter Erin went into labor on air during our very first Good Enough Moms show!)
What is your role at FM107?: Cohost of Good Enough Moms with my darling daughter Erin Erickson Garner (who also is a Good Enough Mom and then some)
What do you wish your role was at FM107?: Determining salaries and bonuses, especially for the weekend hosts
Share a favorite FM107 moment: After revealing on our very first show that my husband and I used to drop the kids off at Sunday School and then sneak home to grab a quickie (a rare romantic moment during those early days of parenting), one of the ministers from our church called me at home to say the senior pastor was upset about what I said on air and wanted to meet with me privately! I totally believed him, but it turned out to be a joke. He went on to say he was recommending our show to all the young parents at church. (Sunday school attendance has increased dramatically since then!)
Share some behind the scenes FM107 gossip: My daughter Erin and Colleen (of Get Real Girls) were a couple of snappy little tap dancers when they were kids growing up in southwest Minneapolis. Who knows, maybe they'll dance for us at some FM107 public event.
List all of the "hats" you wear in your current life: Wife, mom, grandma, daughter, sister, friend, professor, administrator, author, public speaker, songwriter, world traveler, and all-around adventure-seeker. (Note that cook and housekeeper are nowhere on the list. I lost both of those hats years ago when I gave up trying to be a perfect mom and realized that Good Enough is Good Enough.)
Describe any past fashion fads that you at the time embraced but now regret: I can't say I truly regret any past fashion fad, but the pink and cranberry polyester minidress with the white go-go boots (worn when I was touring with a folk-rock group in the 60s) probably were not the high point of my fashion career.
Name a television character past or present that best describes your personality: Samantha from Sex in the City, without a doubt. The loyal aging wife and doting grandmother I portray on Good Enough Moms is just my media persona. Samantha is the real me.
What's your favorite comfort food?: Thanksgiving dinner, the whole shebang from the turkey and dressing to the pumpkin and pecan pies that make the buttons on my jeans pop.
If there was an FM107 reality show who would get kicked out of the house first?: What do you mean, "if"?? This IS a reality show and you (the listeners) vote with your ears to determine who gets kicked off first. (Please don't kick Erin and me off. We love doing this show!)
Do you believe in love at first sight?: Love means something deeper to me, but I definitely believe in attraction at first sight -- and I'm not just talking about physical attraction. The first time I saw my husband, I found him very intriguing in a way I couldn't quite explain. It took us a while to really connect -- and a few stops and starts to stay connected -- but after almost 38 years of marriage, I'm still intrigued. (OK, keep in mind that's my radio persona talking, not the wild Samantha who lives inside me and would never stay married for 38 years.)
First celebrity crush: Tim Considine who played "Spin" on the "Spin and Marty" series that was part of the Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s. (Yes, I'm that old!) He reminded me of a childhood boyfriend who moved away to Arizona. Later I fell hard for Elvis Presley, but had to pretend to like Pat Boone better because only bad girls liked Elvis.
Latest celebrity crush: George Clooney (smart, socially conscious, very sexy) and Mario Lopez (love those Latin lovers, especially when they can shake it like Mario can)
Name another person on this earth you would love to trade places with for a day (and why): Bill Gates so I could direct a big chunk of his money toward underfunded programs for young children and parents in need. (Bill, if you're reading this, give me a call. I have some advice for you!)
Name the last good movie you saw: Lives of Others, a brilliant film about East Germany during Communist rule. It especially interested me because of training and consultation I currently am doing with mental health professionals in Germany. (But, to give a balanced picture of my cinematic preferences, I confess that Borat made me laugh so hard I almost wet my pants.)
Name the last good book you read: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, whose first book (The Kite Runner) is one of my all-time favorites. I also am reading the second of three books in the Maisie Dobbs series, totally engrossing mystery novels set in London between the two World Wars, loaded with wonderful characters, psychology, history, romance and pure entertainment.
What TV show(s) are you currently hooked on?: American Idol, The Office, and Boston Legal. I also loved Grey's Anatomy for a while, but it needs something new to hold my interest. (George Clooney perhaps?)
