Symptoms of Cancer
Unfortunately, many types of cancer don't have obvious symptoms or cause pain until they are advanced. Because early-stage cancer symptoms tend to be subtle, they are often mistaken for signs of other health issues.
Seven warning signs of cancer
Changes in bowel or bladder habits
A sore that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or a lump in the breast or any other part of the body
Indigestion or difficulty swallowing
An obvious change in a wart or mole
A nagging cough or hoarseness
Consult your physician if you have any of these signs and symptoms.

Often incorrectly called "a man's disease," heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease (which includes heart attack and stroke), claims the lives of 504,000 women in the United States every year. That's more than the next 16 causes of death combined, including breast cancer.
Heart attacks alone kill almost 250,000 women each year, and women under age 50 who have had heart attacks are twice as likely to die from them as men in the same age group.
Now armed with specific information about women's heart disease, the hospitals and clinics of the HealthEast Care System are actively educating women at risk with information that will empower them to take charge of their own heart health. By tailoring our approach to women's needs, our goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women throughout the communities we serve.
Start by asking your doctor these nine critical questions:
What are my risk factors for heart disease, and what can I do to lower my risk?
What are the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease or a heart attack?
What should I know about the effects of menopause on my health?
What's my blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) - and are those numbers considered healthy?
If I smoke, what's the best way to quit?
Are my risk factors for heart disease the same or different for stroke, and what are the symptoms of stroke?
What is the latest on low-dose aspirin for heart attack prevention and treatment?
If I experience chest pain, what is your overall plan for evaluation?
If I experience symptoms of a heart attack, which health care system is the best to go to?
Signs and Symptoms
If you experience signs of a possible heart attack, call 911 immediately.
Heart attack warning signs:
Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
Pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, jaw or arms.
Chest discomfort may also be experienced in the upper back between the shoulder blades.
Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath.
Less common signs in women:
Atypical chest pain, stomach or abdominal pain.
Unexplained weakness, fatigue or anxiety.
Palpitations, cold sweat or paleness.
Shortness of breath (often associated with the signs listed above).

Waterbirth- what is it all about?
Often called a "gentle birth," waterbirth is a safe option for both mothers and babies. It has steadily gained in popularity in recent years as many women have found they prefer the calming effects of warm water to a traditional, or "land," birth. During a waterbirth, the mother gives birth under water in a birthing tub. She may also spend part of her labor in the tub. This special tub is larger and deeper than a regular bathtub and it allows the mother to try a variety of different positions during labor and delivery. The baby emerges into the warm water before being brought out to take its first breath.
See the Woodwinds Waterbirth tubs, click to enlarge:
Many women who've chosen waterbirth have experienced the following benefits:
A birth that's as safe as a "land" birth
Reduced pain and increased support to tense muscles
Increased comfort and relaxation
Decreased adrenaline production, allowing for a shorter labor
Easier to move during labor and delivery
Reduced pressure on the abdomen, better blood circulation and more oxygen to the mother and baby due to the buoyancy of the water
Increased sense of independence, power and autonomy during labor and delivery
Reduced need for medical intervention and pain medication
Reduced rate of Cesarean section
Reduced rate of episiotomy, as water relaxes the pelvic floor muscles
Father/partner may take a more active role in the birth experience
Advantages for baby:
An easier, more gentle transition from mother's womb to an external "womb" of water that is weightless, warm, wet and soft
Decreased trauma at birth
More blood flow to the baby due to better circulation of the mother
Baby isn't stimulated to induce breathing, which results in less crying after birth and a calmer, more alert state
Bacteria is dissipated in the water, reducing the risk of infection to the baby
Cord cutting after birth is delayed until it stops pulsating, allowing a continuous oxygen flow to baby
Moms have reported better initial breastfeeding

Learning that you or someone you care about has a tumor is never easy, especially if it is difficult to treat.
First in the Upper Midwest
St. Joseph's Hospital was the first in the Upper Midwest to offer the revolutionary technology of the CyberKnife® Stereotactic Radiosurgery System.
The CyberKnife gives patients new hope for the treatment of tumors and lesions that previously have been diagnosed as inoperable or untreatable with existing technology.
What we treat
CyberKnife technology is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat tumors and lesions throughout the body.
St. Joseph's Hospital uses CyberKnife to treat a variety of tumors including those in the head, neck and spine, as well as tumors of the lung, pancreas, liver, kidney and pelvis. When appropriate, we can also treat tumors in other areas of the body.
About the CyberKnife Center
The CyberKnife Center at St. Joseph's Hospital was developed in partnership between the HealthEast Neurovascular Institute and HealthEast Cancer Care. Our programs have developed a reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate care. The CyberKnife Center reaffirms our commitment to superior care for our patients.
The CyberKnife project is led by a physician team that includes co-directors Leslie Nussbaum, MD, neurosurgeon and Ross McBride, MD, radiation oncologist, in collaboration with neurosurgeons Eric Nussbaum, MD, and Terry Hood, MD, and surgeon Andrew Fink, MD.
